BIOGRAPHY
CHRIS JORIE |
 |
Chris Jorie is originally from upstate New York, and he brings 35 years of
experience to his work in theatre, film and television. He is the recipient of the
first-ever REVELS Directing Fellowship for 2007-2008.
He has directed Off-Broadway, and nationally for the Coronet, West Coast Ensemble,
and Court Theatres in Los Angeles; Oldcastle Theatre in Bennington,
Vermont; and Theatre Aspen in Aspen, Colorado. Chris has worked as
Resident Director at San Francisco's New Conservatory Theatre; and Director
of Education for Los Angeles's Serendipity Theatre - an Equity Children's Theatre
Company named Best New Children's Theatre in the United States by the
American Alliance for Theatre and Education in 1994.
He has been a producer for the LA Stage and Film Company, sister company to
the critically acclaimed N.Y. Stage and Film Company in summer residence at
Vassar College.
He has also been Producing Director for CityKids, LA, in association with
CityKids, New York; and Guest Artist Director for Aspen Theatre in the Park,
Aspen Colorado; The Lancaster Drama Workshop sponsored by the New York
State Arts Council; as well as a Guest Artist Instructor for the California Arts
Council Artist in the Schools Program.
Chris directed the national premiere of Stephen Temperely's hit SOUVENIR direct from its
Broadway run. Additional credit include the regional premieres of THE GUYS for The
Vine Theatre; DOUBT, A BODY OF WATER, COYOTE ON A FENCE, BOSTON MARRIAGE,
PROOF, SPINNING INTO BUTTER; and WIT, for Orlando Theatre Project where he is
a Resident Company Member. WIT received the Lillie Stoates Award for best production
for the 2000-2001 Season for professional theatre in Central Florida. As Artistic Director
of Orlando Rep he directed regional premieres of SEE ROCK CITY, A YEAR WITH FROG
AND TOAD, JUST SO, and UNDER THE BRIDGE. As Producing Artistic Director and
Associate Artist for the Civic Theatres of Central Florida he directed the
regional premieres of HAVING OUR SAY, PICASSO AT THE LAPIN AGILE,(winner of the
Lillie Award for best production of the 1998-99 season in Central Florida); and A
QUESTION OF MERCY.
Jorie was a semifinalist in the Drama Leagues New Directors/New Works Series, and
the Malibu International Playwrighting Festival for his most recent play, THE REAL
ME - a story about children with disabilities. He was selected as a semifinalist in the
National Endowment for the Arts/Theatre Communications Group Career Development
Program for Directors for the spring, 2000. In 1999 he was a semifinalist in the
Drama League's New Directors/New Works Series for his original script, I TOUCH
THE FUTURE -based on the life and words of Christa McAuliffe, (the teacher aboard
NASA's Challenger Mission). The play, also honored by United Arts of Central Florida,
is touring The Los Angeles Schools along with Jorie's play, THE SPIRIT IN MY SOUL -
the voices of Rosa Parks & Harriet Tubman produced by Enrichment Works.
Jorie is a writer of fiction, non-fiction, screenplays, and poetry. He has performed for
the past thirty years in off-Broadway and regional theatre, as well as television and film,
working with such distinguished talents as George C. Scott, Charlton Heston, Mary
McDonnell, Laura San Giacomo, Ellen Barkin, James Woods, Robert Guillame, Gary
Marshall, and John Ritter.
Jorie majored in Theatre Arts at the State University of New York, Fredonia and
continued his studies at San Francisco State University where he received the George
Heller Scholarship from AFTRA for his Special Major Program, Dramatic Concepts in
Social Responsibility, from the Film, Writing, and Social Science Departments. He
graduated Cum Laude from the University. Chris is a proud member of AEA, AFTRA,
SAG, The Dramatists Guild, The Society of Stage Directors and Choreographers, and
the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators. |
